Bluey and the 100 Kilometre Hike (Part 2)
12:40 AM – Tuesday September 15th
I took longer than I would have liked to get out of Point Peron, but that was something that couldn’t be helped. I decided to swim close to the shore, to avoid the jellyfish. Once I passed an area with very few of them, I swam out to deeper waters. At that time, I was going a little slower than 30 km per hour, because I wanted to make up for lost time. Consequently, I reached Busselton Jetty around 10 minutes later. I still didn’t have time for fishing, unfortunately, but it was still too early for the fish to be out anyways.
Instead, I dropped my pack and ate a bit of shrimp salad. It wasn’t as nice as it usually tasted, as it was packed a week earlier for the official weighing of my bag; since I was travelling so far, a couldn’t bring more than fifteen kilograms. It was for a good reason though, and even if the rule wasn’t there, I wouldn’t bring any more than that anyway. Besides, there’s no need for a tent or sleeping gear anyway as my hike is only for one day. That took down the weight by a lot.
01:05 AM – Still Tuesday September 15th
I left Busselton at the right time, slowing down to a leisurely pace of 15 kilometres per hour. I can understand why this hike isn’t for the ordinary Scouts, but I am no ordinary Scout. I worked hard and persevered and stayed up late with my friends at Scouts playing games like Magic and Exploding Kittens to get to this point. Without all that I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this hike or anything in the qualifying round.
So, I think of all that when I swim along the beaches of Australia. Especially the exploding Kittens part. More especially how I won basically every game. Its what I’m still thinking of as I arrive at Esperance half an hour later. I decided to forgo the stops in between and just go for it. Why not?
01:35 AM – Take a guess (Yes, it’s Tuesday September 15th)
This time I go fishing. I set up my reel and lie down against my pack, casually tossing mini octopodes into my mouth when I see it. My reel keeps swivelling from left to right and back to left again. It had only been five minutes! My flippers gripped the reel tightly to make sure that whatever it is didn’t get away. This way, I could have extra snacks when I get to the next stop.
I tug and tug and tug but whatever it is really doesn’t want to be caught. Finally, I give one last pull with all of my strength, and there it is. What I caught. A young great white shark.
